The original road bridge accross the Murray River replaced some years ago, but still in use.

Railways on the Wharf

Morgan and Murray Bridge were railheads that allowed transhipment of passengers, freight and agricultural produce to and from the paddle steamers that plied the Murray River system and connected the river to the Port of Adelaide, as the Murray Mouth was impossible to traverse by vessels of any size.

Willow Haven - Mannun Campground

Willows are a weed on the Murray River and were introduced during the paddle steamer era. Unlike most Australian campsites which are normally dry, dusty and devoid of green vegetation, they do provide attractive green backdrops to the river banks and are a haven for birds.

Young Husband Houseboat

I love the name "Young Husband." On the Lower Murray it is a popular geographical name. At the Mouth there is the "Young Husband" peninsula, and North of Mannun it is the name of a small town. I wonder why? Anyway here is a nice colourful houseboat being driven by a "young husband" attempting to dock at Young Husband. This was his 3rd attempt, but it did give me the opportunity to get the shot "just right."

Murray Bend

North of Mannum the river lazilly meanders its way northwards leaving lots of billabongs each side of the main channel. The banks that separate the river from the billabongs are now popular for holiday houses. A 1956 flood will certainly create some issue here! Perhaps a flood levy when they lose everything will be required.

Early Farmhouse Ruins

There are lots of old ruined stone cottages along the Murray River, most East of the Goyder Line which marks the limit of reliable rainfall to allow agricultural pursuits. My Grandfather constructed one of these, just North of this one.

A lonely houseboat fights its way upstream against a 1 knt current.
